The Last Lesson by Alphonse Daudet

Alphonse Daudet lived during the Franco-Prussian war and this particular tale concerns a day in the life of an Alsatian schoolboy. He arrives at school only to be told that the Germans who will soon occupy his country disapprove of the French language and today will be his last lesson. I like the story for the kind of ethos it evokes of the period and of the culture.
